About Big Sky

In the early years the company was known as Farm Bureau Mutual Rural Insurance Company of Gallatin County and later as Mutual Rural Insurance Company of Gallatin County. The company was established in 1936 to provide fire and lightning insurance coverage to the rural population of Gallatin and adjacent counties.  To better reflect our present scope we are now Big Sky Farm Mutual Insurance Company, a state wide mutual company. We are regulated by the Montana Insurance Commissioner’s Office and governed by a local board of directors. Today with expanded coverages we still provide the same personal assistance, fair rates and prompt local claim service.  Coverage is offered on farms and ranches, city and rural homes, seasonal dwellings, manufactured homes and rural public buildings.

Big Sky Farm Mutual has built substantial reserves and participates in a reinsurance program to insure that it is financially stable and not adversely affected by large losses.  The company has a proud heritage of working with insured’s to provide personal service and affordable coverage while maintaining financial security.

What is a mutual…

A mutual insurance company is owned and operated by the policyholders. It is run for their exclusive benefit. There are no stockholders. Each policyholder is entitled to a voice in the affairs of the company and directors of the company must be policyholders themselves. Only policyholders can vote in the election of directors at the annual meeting of the mutual. Together, the policy holders elect the board of directors, who in turn elect the officers of the company and office employees.
